ImageMaker magazine spread photography

This image was achieved through a series of developments through Adobe Lightroom to reach the final image i wished for. The imagery was used in a double-page spread i designed for international photography & wedding photography magazine ImageMaker Magazine. As my client, i designed for them a spread which featured a tutorial on the correct uses of toning in images, with curves, levels and gradient maps. I selected this photograph because of the way in which the silver lining of the cloud is caught, showing a contrast between light and dark, and how the clouds enabled me to manipulate them in such a way to bring out many soft blue and white tones from this image.

In the style of Stanley Donwood

Above i have displayed a painting i created in the style of Stanley Donwood's 2003 map paintings. His concept was based around cities being inhabited by only 7 select colours, taking words from the very streets he would paint, and display them in these select colours, marking out the roads and paths of famous cities like Los Angeles, Grozny and Baghdad. I completed this piece for a task in college inwhich i had to design a painting in the style of another artist. The street map you can see above is of central liverpool. I took pictures of several information kiosks, all which had a large overview map of the central area, and began to draw out how my map would look. I used the exact same paint colours as Stanley Donwood did (In reading his latest book 'Dead Children Playing', inwhich he has wrote commentary on his 2003 pieces, he notes the specific colours), and used words both from his pieces and the individual streets i was currently painting the map of.

Identity #2

During work within college i was tasked with generating an identity. After mindmapping and conceptual sketches, i came to the conclusion that i felt most comfortable in representing myself, literally as myself. I decided to experiment with illustration, and proceeded to digitally manipulate sketches of myself, combined with the scanned in texture of old paper in found lying around, and a simple outlining circle (which i found in many other works which inspired me).

Illustration #2

Above is another experimentation with drawing and digital manipulation (Using programs such as Adobe Illustrator). The concept behind this drawing came from when a friend and i discussed how ghosts are widely regarded as scary and often horrifying creatures, but what if we considered them peaceful, and at that, part of a small community, a collection of people? i quickly came to the idea that they would be ruled in a monarchy, thus presenting, the ghost king.

Identity #1

Inspired by the clean work of Australlian design agency 'Debaser' and the infamous works of Julian Opie. It was an effort in Illustration and developing a way to represent myself visually.

Illustration #1

The image above is one is a series of experimentation with hand rendered illustrations and the use of a scanner to digitally manipulate the effort. The entire look is based upon simple, and little-effort doodles being enhanced with brash but subtle colours, deriving from the CYMK default figures. The actual content represents a clown, thrown into everyday life as a working class man, discovering an idea, yet showing little interest in his life.

Major Acid

For over 2 years i have been running an electronic music blog called Major Acid. The name comes from a friends description of music seeping through a set of speakers. I am currently working on developing the blog into a fully fledged website, an interactive community. The design was inspired by a lot of artwork design for music in the industry my blog targets. I experimented with many hand rendered sketches, and it was around this time i began using a scanner to digitally manipulate my works on a computer. Above is the result of such a process.
